Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries and details about using this utility.

Yes, 100%. Telekit Tools SQL Formatter operates 100% client-side in your local browser sandbox without sending any data over the network. Your SQL queries, table schemas, proprietary business logic, column identifiers, and sensitive credentials never leave your device and are never logged or stored on any server.
Naive regex-based formatters perform global substring substitutions, which can mistakenly capitalize or alter keywords found inside text literals (e.g. converting 'Select your plan' to 'SELECT your plan'). Our lexical tokenizer isolates single-quoted strings, double-quoted strings, and comments into immutable tokens before keyword formatting is applied, ensuring literal data values remain completely unchanged.
The formatter recognizes standard SQL single-line comments (--), MySQL hash comments (#), and multi-line block comments (/* ... */). Under the default 'Preserve' policy, comments maintain their contextual placement and indentation alongside formatted clauses. You can also select the 'Strip Comments' policy to remove all comments for clean production minification.
The formatter provides dedicated syntax handling for 6 major dialects: ANSI Standard SQL, PostgreSQL (including dollar-quoted strings and jsonb operators), MySQL / MariaDB (backtick escaping and hash comments), SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server T-SQL (square bracketed identifiers), and Oracle PL/SQL. Dialect-specific keywords, comments, and operator rules are respected across all modes.
Yes! Complex modular queries utilizing the WITH clause (Common Table Expressions) and deeply nested subqueries inside parentheses are detected by the AST parser and indented recursively. This makes multi-level analytical pipelines, recursive hierarchies, and window functions immediately readable.
Trailing comma placement places commas at the end of each column definition (col1, col2), which is the traditional ANSI SQL standard. Leading comma placement positions commas at the beginning of subsequent lines (col1 , col2), which is popular among database administrators to produce cleaner git diffs and simplify commenting out lines without syntax errors.
Yes. The formatter supports multi-statement scripts separated by semicolons (;). Each statement is identified, parsed, and formatted independently with clean line separation between queries. The Query Structural Metrics inspector reports the exact statement count detected across your script.
Click the 'API Code (Alt+S)' button in the hero toolbar or select a language tab (Python, JS/TS, PHP, Java, Go, C#, Bash) in the formatted output studio. The Developer API modal provides runnable, copy-paste ready code with connection pooling, parameterized execution, and error handling tailored to your query, complete with a 1-click 'Download Script' button to save standalone executable code files (.ts, .py, .go, .rs, .java, .cs, .sh).
Yes! Click 'JSON Report' to download a complete JSON audit proof (`sql_formatting_report.json`), click 'CSV Metrics' for an RFC-4180 CSV matrix of query dimensions, or click 'Download .md' to save a complete GitHub Flavored Markdown specification document. You can also use the 1-Click Quick Copy Strip across Formatted SQL, Minified SQL, One-Line Escaped, Markdown Block, JSON Audit, and CSV Metrics.
Press 'Alt+P' for DevToys Smart Clipboard Auto-Detect (auto-reading and formatting SQL directly from clipboard), '/' to quickly focus the raw SQL textarea, 'Esc' to clear the workspace or close open modals, 'Ctrl+Enter' (or Cmd+Enter) to trigger instant formatting, 'Shift+Ctrl+Enter' to format and copy output to clipboard, 'Alt+V' to toggle 2-Column Split vs Stacked layout density, 'Alt+S' to launch Developer API Code Snippets and download standalone scripts, 'Alt+K' (or '?') to open the Shortcuts Guide, 'Alt+R' for Surprise Me / Random scenario, and 'Alt+C' to auto-clean markdown code fences.
